When people ask me 'Why hammocks?' I explain it thus, when you go to set up a tent there is proper way to construct it, with hammocks you get given all the ingredients for a comfortable shelter with countless ways to tweak and change to suit your needs. Plus it's fun!

Swinging around in a hammock is defiantly a lovely way to enjoy the forest, not the lightest setup but one of the most comfortable. In this post I'm going to go over a few points regarding my new investment into a full DD Hammocks 'Superlight' setup.

I didn't think I'd ever be counting grams in my backpack, but carrying everything around for a full day before using it has defiantly focused my attention to weight saving items. DD's Superlight range offers the lightest hammock in the world at 270g and its tiny you really could fit this in to a coat pocket and forget it's there.

I also opted for the superlight tarp weighing 470g and 3 meters x 2.8 meters it doesn't compromise on coverage. The material is a ripstop nylon with PU 3,000mm coating "waterproof in the heaviest of storms". I can vouch for this with a few additional points as long as its set up taught and you don't touch the underneath!

Both incredibly light bits of kit, not the cheapest but as you're buying all the components individually you can pick and choose to couple these bits with any other stand alone piece of kit.

A few points I've learned about sleeping swinging:

1. Get an under-quilt or a good sleeping mat. Your body weight compressed any insulation between you and the hammock and makes it useless, couple this with the big windy air gap underneath and brrrrrr.

2. Mosquito net is not just for bug protection. Thought it would be lovely (now it's getting cooler and there are less and less bugs) to sleep without a net. Turns out the net holds warmer moister air close to your, without this I got a sore husky throat to wake up to.

3. Wind is not your friend.
